David Carson
"David Carson continues to be one of the worlds most distinctive typographic voices -
Much imitated, but never matched."
- Ellen Lupton. NYC.
Born in Texas, September 8, 1952, David is best known for his innovative magazine design and use of experimental typography. He has been one of the greatest influences on graphic design in the last 25 years.
He attended San Diego State University and Oregon college of Commercial Art, Whilst working towards a bachelor of arts in sociology in Switzerland he attended a 3 week workshop in graphic design as part of his degree, where he met his first great influence, Hans-Rudolf Lutz.
Since then he has won over 170 awards for his graphic design work.
In the late 90's he shifted from "surf subculture" to corporate work for Nike, Levis, Citibank and most recently Bose. His list of clientele has grown enormously from art directing music videos to working for Giorgio Armani, Ray Ban, Sony, Kodak and Pepsi.
There is currently a David Carson Documentary in production, set to be released towards the end of the year.
"It's not about knowing all the gimmicks and photo tricks. If you haven't got the eye, no program will give it to you." - David Carson
